Practice Specialties: Sports Medicine

Every year there are millions of sports injuries in the United States. They are a leading cause of injuries among children and young adults. These injuries can be acute or the result of overuse. An acute injury occurs suddenly, while overuse injuries may progress over time. Some common acute injuries include contusions, sprains, tears of a ligament or tendon and fractures. Some common overuse injuries may be the result of repetitious movements involving the shoulder, elbow, wrist, heel and knees.

Always be aware of the warning signs of an injury including:
· Pain
· Numbness and tingling
· Swelling
· Localized tenderness
· Weakness
· Reduced range of motion

Perhaps the most important aspects of avoiding permanent injury are prevention and prompt medical attention. It is important to understand how to participate in sports correctly, and to wear appropriate protective gear, especially during contact sports. It is also important to seek medical attention as soon as possible after an injury has occurred.

Our physicians successfully treat thousands of sports injuries each year. Our clinic provides an on call physician to the Emergency Room at Gulf Coast Medical Center on twenty-third street 24 hours a day. We also treat acute sports injuries promptly in our office during our regular business hours.

High School Athletics

Several of our physicians participate in volunteer coverage of high school teams and work closely with athletic trainers of many local schools in the care of their athletes. All of the physicians help accommodate student athletes' schedules during regular office hours.
