Southern Orthopedic Specialists is proud to share the comeback story of Mike J., who has regained full range of motion and nearly all of his strength after suffering a serious shoulder injury and undergoing treatment with Dr. Ryan Cotton, a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Southern Orthopedic Specialists.

In March 2024, Mike fell approximately five feet from a building and landed on his left shoulder, resulting in a significant injury that required surgical repair. After extensive testing and evaluation, Dr. Cotton performed shoulder surgery to address the damage and restore stability and function.

As part of his recovery, Mike began physical therapy at Southern Orthopedic Specialists, where he worked closely with therapist Kelsey Barr. Six weeks into therapy, Mike developed a frozen shoulder, which was a known potential complication given the severity of his injury. After consulting with Dr. Cotton, it was determined that a second surgery would provide the best opportunity for improved mobility and long-term success. That procedure was performed in December 2024, and Mike resumed therapy the very same day as surgery.

“Mike’s determination and commitment to his recovery made a tremendous difference in his outcome,” said Dr. Cotton. “With complex shoulder injuries, setbacks such as frozen shoulder can occur, but with timely intervention and coordinated care, patients can achieve excellent results. Our goal is always to restore function and help patients return to the activities that bring them joy.”

Mike continued therapy through April 2025, supported by Dr. Cotton, his office team and his therapist. Now, nearly two years after his initial injury and approaching his 72nd birthday, Mike reports full range of motion and most of his strength restored. He has returned to the activities he enjoys most, including working in his garden and spending time in his workshop.
