Maintaining an active lifestyle plays an important role in overall health and well-being, and golf offers a great way to stay physically and mentally engaged while spending time outdoors. Although golf is considered a low-impact sport, the repetitive motions involved in swinging can place significant strain on the spine, shoulders, elbows, hips, and wrists. Because of these demands, golfers often benefit from specialized orthopedic care tailored to the sport.

At Southern Orthopedic Specialists, we recognize the physical challenges golfers face and provide comprehensive care for a wide variety of golf-related injuries and conditions. Recovering properly and returning to the course safely often requires experienced specialists who understand both the game and the body mechanics involved.

Our team includes board-certified and fellowship-trained doctors with advanced expertise in sports medicine and orthopedic care. Using an individualized, patient-focused approach, they work to relieve pain, restore mobility, and help golfers recover safely so they can return to play with confidence.

Preparing for Golf & Preventing Injury

Although golf may not seem physically demanding, the repetitive nature of the swing can place ongoing stress on muscles, tendons, and joints throughout the body. Taking the proper steps to prepare before playing can help reduce the likelihood of injury and improve overall performance.

Incorporating stretching, strengthening exercises, and mobility training into your routine can improve flexibility, balance, and stability. Warming up before each round is also important for preparing your body for the movements required during play.

The exercises below are recommended by Southern Orthopedic Specialists’ doctors to support mobility, improve stability, and help golfers stay healthy on and off the course.

Injury Prevention Exercises

Torso Rotation Stretch

  1. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms crossed over your chest.
  2. Slowly rotate your upper body to one side while keeping your hips facing forward.
  3. Continue until you feel a gentle stretch through your torso and lower back.
  4. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds.
  5. Repeat on the opposite side.

Side Plank

  1. Begin by lying on your side with your elbow positioned directly under your shoulder and your legs extended.
  2. Lift your hips off the ground, creating a straight line from your head to your feet.
  3. Keep your core engaged and avoid letting your hips drop.
  4. Hold for 20 to 40 seconds, then switch sides.

Hip Rotation

  1. Lie on your side with your knees bent and arms extended straight out in front of you.
  2. Keeping your knees together, slowly rotate your top arm across your body, opening your chest toward the opposite side.
  3. Allow your upper back to rotate while keeping your lower body stable.
  4. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds and return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

Wrist Flexor Stretch

  1. Extend one arm straight in front of you with your palm facing upward.
  2. Use your opposite hand to gently pull your fingers downward toward the floor.
  3. Continue until you feel a stretch along your forearm.
  4. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds.
  5. Switch arms and repeat.

Squats

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes pointed slightly outward.
  2. Lower your body by bending your knees and pushing your hips back while keeping your chest upright.
  3. Keep your weight through your heels as you descend.
  4. Push through your heels to return to a standing position.
  5. Repeat for 10 to 15 repetitions.

When to Be Seen

Continuing to play golf or remain highly active while dealing with pain or an injury can worsen symptoms and delay recovery. What begins as mild soreness or discomfort may develop into a more serious condition if left untreated. Seeking evaluation early from an orthopedic or sports medicine specialist can help prevent additional damage and support a quicker, safer recovery.

At Southern Orthopedic Specialists, our doctors understand the importance of identifying the underlying cause of pain. An accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan can help restore function, relieve discomfort, and get you back to your normal activities as safely as possible.

You should consider scheduling an appointment if you experience:

  • Pain that continues during or after playing golf
  • Limited flexibility, stiffness, or difficulty rotating during your swing
  • Symptoms that do not improve with rest or home treatment
  • Sudden or sharp pain in the shoulder, back, elbow, hip, knee, or wrist
  • Weakness, instability, or changes that interfere with your swing mechanics

Common golf-related injuries include:

  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Shoulder injuries, including rotator cuff conditions
  • Lower back pain and disc-related conditions
  • Wrist and hand injuries
  • Hip and knee overuse injuries
  • Tendinitis and muscle strains
